Guest Post || Keeping Summer Skin Naturally Beautiful

Hello everyone, hope you're all well! Today's post is written by the lovely Michelle from Skana Spa in Upstate NY!  Happy reading!

Ah – summer. The time you get to enjoy blue skies, warm breezes, and hot sun.  The sun’s rays feel fabulous on your skin, but, even while enjoying sunbathing, you know those rays are causing real damage.  In fact, if you flip over on your towel and look around, you see lots of women that have had their skin scorched by the sun for too long.  They have that leather look that fills you with dread and sends you to your mirror at home to check for wrinkles and sunspots.

Having to worry about skin damage during the summer simply isn’t fair, especially if you had to survive a frigid, skin-drying winter before getting to enjoy the warm weather.  If you take certain precautions, you can still enjoy the sun and not end up wrinkled like a prune.

First, a powerful waterproof sunscreen is an absolute necessity.  Experts recommend you use a 30 SPF, which blocks 97% of the sun’s UVB rays.   Any higher number doesn’t really add much protection, so an SPF of 70 isn’t worth the extra price some companies charge.

In addition to using sunscreen, make sure to use other soothing body products to slough off rough skin and reduce inflammation.  One easy and effective homemade treatment inspired by the experts of Skana Spa of Upstate NY resort, Turning Stone, is a natural body scrub made with just a few ingredients. The recipe listed below is simple and quite effective.  It also makes a great gift for summer parties and events.

Natural Summer Body Scrub
Ingredients:
½ cup sea salt, finely grained
½ cup ground coffee beans, finely grained
¼ cup sesame oil
½ teaspoon eucalyptus oil (about 20 drops)

Directions: Mix the salt, coffee, and oils in a small container. It will make about 1 ½ cups or enough for three treatments. While in the shower, apply it while standing away from the water spray. Massage thoroughly into your skin with firm, semi-circular movements, taking time to activate all the ingredients. Rinse completely off of your skin.

After the abuse of the summer sun, this all-natural, non-chemical recipe will brighten and detox your skin, leaving it soft and glowing.  The coffee beans have powerful anti-inflammatories that reduce redness and inflammation in skin cells and that make your summer skin healthy and beautiful. Try this recipe at home and bottle some for gifts.  Take it to the hostess of the next party you attend and give some to your friends.  They’ll love this natural beauty body scrub, too!
